Thank You To Our Local Sports Teams!

Thank You To Our Local Sports Teams!
We would like to extend a big thank you out to the local sports teams that work the kids into their very busy schedules.

A team’s success is dependent on their ability to work together to achieve a common goal. The same can be said for just about anything one does in life. Instilling in children the importance of leveraging their strengths, for the betterment of the team, is a valuable life skill.

Race for Kids, A Great Success!

Race for Kids, A Great Success!
The club’s first ever Race for Kids was a great success.

Sixteen teams took part in figuring out the riddles and finding the checkpoints where they completed “Minute to Win It” type challenges. At the finish line, we all enjoyed time together to review the results of the event.

The teams raised over $10,000 and our sponsors provided $4000 in financial and in-kind support.

Throwback Winter 2014-15

Throwback Winter 2014-15
As the days get longer and the sun starts to feel warm again, I can’t help but think back on the winter months and all the memories that we made.

The more than average snowfall may of gotten old fast for us adults, but snow filled fun kept the kids busy all winter long.

We got to go skating and sliding, and there were many snowmen made.

We were very privileged and thrilled to recognize our Board President and volunteer of 6 years, Nigel Bayliss.

Where Is My Ponytail!

Where Is My Ponytail!
There are numerous foundations in Canada to whom people can donate their hair in order to make natural wigs for cancer patients.

As soon as one of our young Club members, Samantha McKenzie, heard about this amazing opportunity, she didn’t hesitate to step up to the challenge.

After Samantha made such a generous donation, she came to the Boys and Girls Club sporting her new, much shorter, hair style. Leaders questioned her on what convinced her to make such a drastic change and she happily replied, “I donated my hair to cancer and they cut off my whole ponytail!”

Fun Time At The Aquatic Center

Fun Time At The Aquatic Center
Last month Hillsborough Drop In took a trip to the Pat Crossman Memorial Aquatic Centre, a 25-metre, six-lane pool open to the public in Riverview.

We had a blast jumping off the diving board into the deep end and making rafts with the numerous foam water toys that they supplied. The day was filled with smiles and laughter, and most importantly, the children got a ton of exercise.

We can’t wait to go back!

The Invention Kit: MaKey MaKey

The Invention Kit: MaKey MaKey

The Riverview Rogers Raising the Grade program has found a fun interactive way to explore concepts like conductivity, electrical circuits and input/output systems for computers by using an invention kit called MaKey MaKey and some old school video games.

While using the invention kit, members could send button inputs to a computer by completing an electrical circuit with certain parts of the chip. Members used Play-Doh, pencils, paperclips and cups of water to create a remote control that could play old Nintendo games.

A Nice Surprise! Go Cats Go!

A Nice Surprise! Go Cats Go!

On December 18th, Drop In was fortunate enough to have Wildcats tickets donated to the program.

We surprised our members, who thought they were coming to our Mystery Bus Tour, with the news by having them guess where we driving too on our way to the game. They were thrilled to find out that we would be watching the Moncton Wildcats take on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles!

A Visit From Checkpoint Germany Food Truck

A Visit From Checkpoint Germany Food Truck

Our club has been running a Food For Thought program that has been very successful. This program teaches our youth culinary and budgeting skills through cooking competitions, kitchen tours of various restaurants, baking, grocery shopping and many more activities.

This month, Michael, the owner of the Checkpoint Germany Food Truck, made an appearance here at the club to educate our Drop In members on what his business is all about. He shared stories about what inspired him to own his own food truck and he explained the process he went through to make his dream a reality.

The First Snow Fall Came With Much Enthusiasm

The First Snow Fall Came With Much Enthusiasm
The first snowfall of the new school year has come with much enthusiasm from the children.

The day camp was a buzz with excitement over the freshly fallen snow as the kids anticipated the opportunity to create and explore in the outdoors. They rushed into their snow pants and mittens and waited eagerly for the leader to escort them outside.

As soon as their boots hit the snow the imaginations started flowing and the white cold ground was soon converted into a winter wonderland filled with snowmen of all sizes, and even some snow furniture!

A group of the children got together to create a snow caterpillar which , as seen in the photo, they sat on with great pride! We are excited to see what other creative ideas their imagination have in store for the many more snowy days to come!

Clown Tag & Ring Master - The preferred games of the day!

Clown Tag & Ring Master - The preferred games of the day!
"When you can't change the direction of the wind, adjust your sails."
- H. Jackson Brown Jr.

Children are some of the most resilient characters on the planet. They can quite literally get hit square in the nose with a ball and shortly after be right back at a friendly game of soccer. This is, yet another lesson we grown ups could all stand to take a moment to really appreciate.

As youth workers we are constantly challenged to be creative and flexible. There is no time I can think of where this logic is more necessary then in the development and implementation of clubs. Sometimes you work for hours in total trying to design a club that will absolutely rock the kids world, only to find out that the plans just won't work or the kids, for what ever reason, are not actually interested in what you have prepared.

A Fun Afternoon with the Wildcats

A Fun Afternoon with the Wildcats
The three local Boys & Girls Clubs were recently the guests of the Moncton Wildcats as they got together to play ball hockey at the Moncton Coliseum.

Each club brought groups of their kids in all age groups to take part in this fun afternoon which was followed shortly afterwards with a pizza party.

At the end of this fun afternoon, the Wildcats gave tickets for all the club players to come back on that Friday to see the Wildcats take on the Saint John Sea Dogs. It was a great time and fun was had by all!

Reminiscing about this past Summer (2014)

Reminiscing about this past Summer (2014)
As youth workers in the summer we are truly fortunate as we get the chance to have our cake and eat it too. We get to work with a fantastic group of people and we also get to enjoy a variety of activities with the kids we love.

This summer was certainly no exception. We traveled all over exploring the beautiful stones at Joggins Beach, viewing the majestic water falls at Fundy National Park and relaxing and playing on the warm sands at Parlee.

It has been yet another amazing summer and we have been truly honoured to have had the chance to share it with new and old children. We thank you for your trust, support and the chance to watch your wonderful children learn and grow.

We wish everyone the best going into this new school year and hope to have all your awesome kids return in the near future.

Hillsborough Drop In's "Rec It" Program

Hillsborough Drop In's "Rec It" Program
At the Hillsborough Drop In, Tuesdays have been allocated to a physical recreation program called Rec It. Throughout the summer we have had a wide variety of options including swimming, mantracker, hunger games, and, recently, kayaking.

Hillsborough Drop In operates out of one of the prettiest buildings in the town. Surrounded on three sides by a duck pond, we spent the winter skating; it seemed a waste not to make use of it this summer.

On July 29th, we had a few parents volunteer their kayaks and took the kids out on the water for the afternoon. This marked the first time kayaking for at least 5 of our members and, it is safe to say, they had a lot of fun!

Rogers Raising the Grade comes to Riverview!

Rogers Raising the Grade comes to Riverview!
The Riverview Boys & Girls Club has been chosen to receive a brand new technology center, provided through the Rogers Youth Fund.

The Rogers Raising the Grade Program will provide youth with the skills, tools and opportunities necessary to excel academically and secure their future success as productive, independent and contributing members of society. It is an interactive after-school program that allows youth to explore their personal interests, receive homework support, connect with mentors and/or tutors, interact with peers, increase their digital literacy, and plan for post-secondary education. Rogers Raising the Grade is a national partnership between the Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada and Rogers.

We are also very excited to announce that Matt McKeigan, former Drop In Coordinator will be moved into the role of Education Manager. Matt started with the Boys & Girls Club in 2010 as a summer student youth worker. He then progressed into the Drop in youth center and was instrumental in the expansion of the program. Matt has also been recognized an one of Boys & Girls Club of Riverview Ambassadors.
